If you were wondering what my favorite day of the week is…it’s Thursday. There’s anticipation. There’s slowness. There’s rest. Someday fairly soon there will be a fire in my fire place, an oversized flannel shirt on my mom bod, and some cheesy predictable love story book in my hands. But this won’t be just on Thursdays. It will be practically every day that the temperature starts with the number 5 or less.
But this information has nothing to do with this blog. I just like Thursdays. And fall.
If you happen to know my dad well, you know he speaks a large amount of words each day. Once, he offered to give me $20 if I would be quiet from El Reno to Hinton. Pretty sure I was no richer when we exited the vehicle half an hour later. Pretty sure, I got that chattiness from him.
Awhile back I was chatting with him. Words, words, words…”You’ve all got healthy kids and a nice home. Your life is perfect.”
(I’m probably misquoting you father, but this is what I gathered from you that day.)
So simplistic, yet life altering for me. In a world that longs for so much stuff, it’s so freeing to simply be content. To appreciate what’s right in front of you.
A few months ago my dad started telling me about Troy Brewer Ministries (TBM). He told me how for 30 years, they have been rescuing kids who have been abducted and enslaved in sexual trafficking. How they have rescued over 11,000 children and currently have 4,000 under their care. How they don’t just rescue children, but they continue to take care of and provide for them through the rescue centers they have staffed around the world.
He told me that God had put it on his heart to do more than just send an offering and I can assure you, that he has been doing much more. He mentioned it to me early on and asked if we’d like to give. He specifically said, I don’t want to harp on you, so I’m just going to mention it once and not again… if you want to help great; if not, that’s okay. I should’ve bet $20 on the fact that he wouldn’t just mention it once.
You know how many times this guy mentioned it? I’d say at least 37 that month.
But…he did do more than just send an offering. He, with the help of friends and family, raised over $4,000 in the first month raising funds for this ministry and made a little trip to TBM to drop it off. And yes, he took a bag. Not a nice little envelope with a check. He took a bag of money. Because that’s who he is. From a couple pennies to hundreds of dollars, he made it clear that every cent mattered to help the rescue efforts.
And just like everything he does, he goes hard in the paint. It didn’t end last month with the bag of $ delivery, but he is continuing to tell people about this work and continuing to raise money to help.
All that to say. This guy has gone from annoyingly sending me photos of boots he wanted to buy to sending me photos, videos, stories, and updates of this ministry he is supporting. It’s always so intriguing to see perspective shifts in people when God puts something on their heart. If you’d like to learn more or help out, feel free to reach out to Kent Butler. P.S. Tomorrow is Thursday.
