Me getting through a day is what I like to compare to an ungraceful dying flamingo with a good attitude. (And the title of this blog has absolutely nothing to do with cute tiny dancer photo!)You’ve probably heard about, or seen, a chicken with it’s head cut off, right? Well lets imagine that being the same case with a big, pink bird that stands on one stick-like leg flailing around fighting life. That’s me!
I’ve never been one to be graceful in any area of my life. I awkwardly stumble through conversations. I angrily sprint after my puppy while yelling through the lot next to my house. I forget backpacks and diaper bags and lunch boxes and extra clothes. Pre-k has about pushed me to my limits with bug books, backpacks, library books, book bags, wear this fun shirt day, this party day. It’s not that I don’t enjoy these things for my kid…I simply ride the struggle bus every day and added needs needing to be organized by 8:00 AM has proven to be challenging.
At least 32 times a week I tell my hubs, “okay…we need a plan,” but I carry through with those plans normally 2 times a week, if I’m lucky. I’ve come to realize I am incapable of planning and doing things gracefully. I’ve decided it’s easiest if I just surround myself with people who accept my madness! I’ve also found life to be much more enjoyable when I embrace it as well.
Speaking of people who accept my madness…I have this girl in my life I refer to as Buddy!! (always said with exclamation)! This is what I have called her for the past 10 years. One of the best friends a human could ask for. Anyway, she would often say “on a scale from one to eternity…”
Think about that for a second. On a scale from one to eternity, a lot of things just don’t matter as much as you’d think.
All that to say, sometimes when I’m walking my messy, mad, ungraceful life, I remind myself that some things score pretty low on that scale in the grand scheme of things. Does my kid really need matching socks? Does her dress really need to match her hair bow? Does she even really need a bow? Does it matter if the lunch box has an ice pack or will a frozen bag of blackberries do the trick?
As they continued their travel, Jesus entered a village. A woman by the name of Martha welcomed him and made him feel quite at home. She had a sister, Mary, who sat before the Master, hanging on every word he said. But Martha was pulled away by all she had to do in the kitchen. Later, she stepped in, interrupting them. “Master, don’t you care that my sister has abandoned the kitchen to me? Tell her to lend me a hand.” The Master said, “Martha, dear Martha, you’re fussing far too much and getting yourself worked over nothing. One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it — it’s the main course, and won’t be taken from her.” -Luke 10:36-42
Let me be Mary! Being Martha is way too tiring and who wants to be high maintenance about supper when we could just sit with Jesus!
